Topic: Firefox crashes when litestep starts it

I had posted this but realized i put the post in the wrong area.

here's the problem.

anytime i click on a LS handled shortcut to start FireFox, Firefox crashes with this error:

it doesn't matter what theme i try switching to, firefox just won't start unless i open an explorer window and click on firefox.exe or a windows firefox shortcut.

my virus scanner is coming up clean.
other apps are not crashing when started with a LS shortcut.

Would be good to keep a single problem in a single topic.

There is one problem though.
it's the problem i re-installed Litestep hoping to fix.

no matter what theme, when i click on my firefox shortcut (Litestep shortcut to start my web browser) my firefox crashes on startup.

if i point my evar to a windows .lnk shortcut that points to firefox... it still crashes.

my firefox does not crash from windows shortcuts, windows CMD execution, or from double clicking the firefox.exe itself.

this is a new problem and reinstalling firefox (and reinstalling the latest LS) did not fix it.

any suggestions?
(yes, cleaned my registry. didn't fix it)

win 7 ultimate 32 bit
firefox 20 (and no, i refuse to update my firefox. anything after v. 20 is very un-user-friendly for me)
Litestep re-downloaded and re-installed today.

Which version of LS are you using? The one which comes with LOSI or got a newer one from lsdev.org?

And in case you used only the installer, I set up an install guide which might have some steps you've missed and might help with the issue.

Another thing you might be interested in: Pale Moon browser. It's basically firefox but with the old GUI, is pretty much up to date with security fixes and other stuff like that. I've been using Pale Moon Portable since FF did the UI downgrade and haven't even considered looking back since. tongue

Re: Firefox crashes when litestep starts it

This made me all kinds of curious, so I installed firefox 20. Unfortunately, it starts fine both from my popup menu and from my desktop shortcut hmm

Re: Firefox crashes when litestep starts it

Sorry i didn't reply before now, but my PC problems progressed and i had to do MAJOR repairs.

it turns out i had a ROOTKIT virus that both SAS and AdAware missed.

once i solved that problem it fixed everything except the "Shutdown" command for litestep crashes litestep. (ctrl-alt-f1 shutdown... crashes also)

i'll just fix that with a custom shortcut somewhere. maybe "sShutdown" or another app.
suggestions for a nice shutdown app to replace it or how to fix the problem instead are welcome.

Re: Firefox crashes when litestep starts it

I would recommend scanning your system using an antivirus LiveCD before trying any other solutions, then run "sfc /scannow", and finally reinstall any applications you think may be affected.
Namely take a great care about [possible] scattered msvc**.dll - best course would be to eliminate any of these DLL's (unless they are 6.0 and lower) and rely on system provided versions of them.

Re: Firefox crashes when litestep starts it

i didn't realize i never replied to this.

i had a rootkit virus that was missed by several virus scanners.
cleaning the virus and reinstalling my browsers worked.
