Topic: Explorer takeover in win7

Just wanted to save this somewhere for future reference, and for a place to try to solve the explorer takeover in win7:

07:57 <the-golem> this part is interesting: The WoW64 subsystem also handles other key aspects of running 32-bit applications. It's involved in managing the interaction of 32-bit applications with the Windows components such as the Registry, which has distinct keys for 64-bit and 32-bit applications. For example HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node is the 32-bit equivalent of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software
08:01 <the-golem> i think i found some other keys that might need switching
08:03 <the-golem> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
08:07 <the-golem> for Shell and AutoRestartShell
08:15 <the-golem> explorer still spawns when i call it
08:16 <the-golem> when i call JUST explorer.
08:16 <the-golem> when i call it with a filepath, then it doesn't spawn

Re: Explorer takeover in win7

It might be worth noting that I've currently installed LiteStep on a per-user basis, so only HKCU changes and not HKLM.

Re: Explorer takeover in win7

After some sleuthing, I think that the Installer and SetShell utility needs to enable access for the 64bit registry.

See: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library … 85%29.aspx

Garnered from SharpE's SetShell.exe source and their installer source

In their ShetShell and Installer source codes, SharpE specifically checks if the system is 64bit before setting the HKLM:/.../system.ini/boot regkey.

Re: Explorer takeover in win7

Ever get anywhere on updating LOSI for this Tobbe?

Re: Explorer takeover in win7

Nope sad For now I'm blaming that on the fact that I don't own a computer with a 64bit OS. (When I get a 64bit os I'll find something else to put the blame on...)

Re: Explorer takeover in win7

you can blame the x64 OS you have is the Win8.  \o/

Re: Explorer takeover in win7

Im willing to test all you need Tobbe.  I don't have an extra key for ya...but if you want to get together one of these days on irc and play with it I'm down.  With 64 bit OSs being around for so long we really can't keep ignoring it if we want to build up the community.

Re: Explorer takeover in win7

I have LS running on my 64 bit laptop and am thinking of installing it with my 64bit reinstall on ym main machine as well. I would do all the testing required!

Re: Explorer takeover in win7

Just FYI:
I've now reinstalled my machine at work with win7 64 bit and LS. Installation was easy and LS was starting fine (not crashing on startup as with 32bit). However, after installing service packs and other updates, now whenever I login, explorer starts as shell. Interestingly, that never happened with my laptop and the same win7 64bit installation. There LS starts just fine.
Neither systems have any problems with opening explorer windows.
